When Nature Nests on Your Front Door

Updated: Apr 26, 2023

April 26, 2023 Update:

🐣🐣🐣We have at least 3 hatched eggs, maybe 4, and at least one maybe two unhatched eggs remaining.

At the Wisconsin Argus we call ‘em like we see ‘em.

They were definitely cuter as unhatched eggs. Sooooo much cuter!!! (See below)

But let’s hope that the ugly duckling phase will soon be behind them and they will grow into extra special specimens.

Mom and Dad have both been spotted since the hatch and everyone appears to be in good health.

Please keep your cats away from us.

Hoping that the remaining 1-2 eggs hatch soon!

A full nest regardless!

We will have to find our camera with zoom lense abilities to get a shot of mommy and daddy birds.

They pick flight over fight at about a 15 foot perimeter.

🐣The Wisconsin Argus has tenants!

Well, they don’t pay rent… so squatters.

Let’s be Wisconsin nice and call them flight-worthy neighbors.

The little birdie nest built on a wreath on our front door of our home.

Or if this was an episode of Friends: The one where their front door becomes home to a bird nest.

Any bird lovers have any advice on how we can be great bird neighbors???

My better half believes they are Red House Finches. I haven’t caught a good glimpse of Mama Bird, yet.

Already up to five eggs as of last check.

Every couple of days one more egg has turned up. My better half read that they are likely to lay anywhere from 2-6 eggs. We are already up to five. Here's to hoping they go for the max. Apparently, the economic outlook for Wisconsin finches is conducive to near maximum egg laying.

Our family is relegated to using the garage and back door for all of our comings and goings.

Thinking about putting a sign inside the door cuz sometimes when I get up early, in the fog of still being half asleep, I forget that we have front door neighbors.

Open to any and all advice or intel on identifying the birds and how to achieve maximum cohabitation.

The birds built their nest on a wreath hanging on our outer front door.

You could say they nested their nest on the entrance to our nest, I guess.

Oh! And if you’re stopping by… please call upon approach for instructions on how to circumvent use of our front door.

Anybody have any wonderful Wisconsin wildlife discoveries adjacent to your dwellings?
