Broken Budget Compromise

They talked about compromise and putting down the partisan daggers to move Wisconsin “Forward” like that’s our state motto or something.

While everyone was a little surprised that the former Superintendent of Public Instruction, Democratic Governor Tony Evers, struck a deal that increased funding for public schools… BUT at the expense of a significant expansion of school choice… we thought, “No, yeah! That’s what compromising looks like.”

We just never see compromise in modern politics. So we assumed maybe we just aren’t really sure what it is supposed to look like, but this must be it.

Then, in full “et tu Brute” mode aka “et tu Tony” Wisconsin’s Guv used his mighty partial veto pen to increase public school funding beyond the terms of the deal… for the next 402 years!

The GOP Legislature definitely feels like their compromise got veto pen stabbed in the back 402 times.

Let’s be real, if anyone thought someone was going to pull a fast one in Wisconsin Biennial Budget negotiations between Governor Evers, Speaker Robin Vos, and Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu - Evers definitely isn’t first on your list, cuz Robin Vos is.

Look forward to endless talk of the constitutionality of the Vanna White Veto, the Frankenstein Veto, and who knows, maybe the Evers Veto will get a cool new name too.

Maybe it’ll even become an @scratchicecreammke ice cream flavor or a new @mbcbrews seasonal.

If you’re a political nerd though, it’ll be a little bit fun to watch it play out!

Veto override attempts in the State Legislature seem destined to fail.

And a legal challenge? Well. Guess who is about to officially tip the #SCOWis to the left: @janetforjustice!

Did the @wisdems just out-finagle Vos?
